Excellent post, Nancy. Thank you. I'm struck by the contribution percentages you listed. 1% of wiki participants making most of the contributions, 99% making few contributions. That, of course, is the long tail made manifest. What I remind enterprise leaders when they confront this kind of distribution is to think not about how many contributions came from the 99%, but *what* contributions came from them. Someone in that long tail of 99% may make only one contribution to the wiki and never contribute again, but -- in the case of the Army wiki -- if that contribution results in lives saved, then its value far exceeds its number.

I was an observer at the second Kaizen event you refer to, Nancy, and I was impressed by the ability and willingness of the participants to make such a significant change. The attitude was clearly a "Yes, if..." not a "Yes, but..."

There was a clear-eyed look at the barriers to making this change, and there was a decided focus on developing solutions.

Interestingly, the Wiki also became a platform for managing the change process in addition to being the new vehicle for carrying Army doctrine. The issues and action plans were also entered on a Wiki page so that the change agents could have an ongoing discussion about how to manage the change effort. The doctrine writers were immediately learning and implementing best practices from each other as a result.

I like this comment: "Interestingly, the Wiki also became a platform for managing the change process in addition to being the new vehicle for carrying Army doctrine.
